CM Leung, the extraordinary wedding photographer

The internationally awarded photographer says, "At the very beginning, I only rely on traditional photo developing output for competition. After a while, I managed to discover the merits of photo printers. Not only do they produce results as good as traditional developing, they give me much more room for creativity."

"I had used traditional photo developing to enter competition, but the results were not so satisfying. It didn't take long for me to discover that a lot of other competitors were using photo printers instead, and their results were great. So I switched to use photo printers and found that they offer a really high level of freedom in adjustment than I could ever have before. From then on, I can adjust the tone and the exposure until I feel satisfied. When the photo is printed, I can immediately check to see if there should be further improvement of any kind, then I can readjust as I wish and print again. Traditional photo developing can never do that for me," he says.
"In the film era, the photographer does not have much control over the post production stage. Now that we are printing photos with photo printers, we can adjust the color tones and details as we like them. The printed outcome is very fine too. For a wedding photographer like me, the traditional obsession is about the reproduction of the subtle pattern and embroidery of a wedding gown on the final photo. With photo printers, this is not an issue anymore. All the details are now finely reproduced on print. This really impresses everyone." CM Leung says. To Leung, a photo printer is not just a convenient tool for the job, it also expresses the photographer's desire to the full.

There are plenty of professional photo printers in the market. We have to choose according to our needs. To do this, we should have some knowledge on color reproduction, printing speed, finesse in printing and the quality and characteristics of the consumables.

"Canon PIXMA Pro9500 professional photo printer is impressive in a way that it needs minimal adjustment to output the desirable colors and tones. Normally, I just use the preset ICC Profile to print. It is accurate enough. Even when I need some sort of burst here and there, I just make some minor adjustment to finish the job off. It is very easy as color management is concerned," CM Leung says, "PIXMA Pro9500 provides plenty of space between black and white, so it can cover both the highlight areas, such as the detail of a wedding gown, and the shadow area such as the background, in fines and clarity. The dynamic range is very wide."
Canon has as much as 11 types of photo papers and special papers that cater to various needs. Photo Paper Plus Glossy II (PP-201) is a highly glossy all-purpose photo paper for general application. Photo Paper Pro Platinum (PT-101) is a flagship photo paper which offers wide color gamut. There are also art papers for different professional results. How would a professional photographer choose his papers?
CM Leung answers, "I should say that most Canon glossy photo papers resemble traditional papers in the look, only that they have richer color tones. However, I personally prefer Fine Art Paper "Photo Rag™" (FA-PR1) because I like its canvas painting effect. Fine Art Paper "Photo Rag™" (FA-PR1) has a matt and fine texture. The non-glossy surface makes it perfect for retaining all the details in the low-shadow area. This is the effect I want for my wedding photos. Of course, you have to print it with PIXMA Pro9500 to get such a result. "
Since we know the crowned photographer is using a PIXMA Pro9500 photo printer, you may also want to know his camera and other secrets. Yes, he uses a EOS 5D Mark II for its Full-frame and high pixel advantages. On picture-taking tips, he says, "You can try Picture Style which is a very handy tool. Set your desired style before you shoot. By altering the contrast and color tones, you can develop different Picture Styles that correspond to different shooting situations. I use several Picture Styles to shoot and so I can easily predict the result. This save me a lot of time and energy in the post production stage as I already have the style I want when I shoot. On photo papers, the choice depends on what you really want. For a texture-rich effect, the Fine Art Paper "Photo Rag™" (FA-PR1) category is recommended. For best black & white gradation and detail, the Photo Paper Plus Semi-gloss (SG-201) is recommended. On printing, just leave it to PIXMA Pro9500 so that you don't worry about anything."
