CHRONOLOGY OF CANON HONGKONG


1971
  • The Hong Kong Branch of Canon Inc. is established at Wing Ping Godown, Fui Yiu Kok Street, Tsuen Wan. The company acts as a sub-department under Canon's "Export Operation Department" and distributes Canon products to China and Taiwan.



  • Hiroshi Saito is appointed Managing Director.
1973
  • The Canon Baby Contest is launched.

1974
  • The Company enters the Calculator market.
1978
  • Turnover generated by Canon's camera and calculator business reaches over Yen 2,000 million.
1979
  • Nobumasa Fuse is appointed Managing Director.
  • The company begins a small-scale computer business.
  • The Company is registered as an independent company and changes its name to Canon HongKong Trading Co. Ltd (CHK).
1980
  • CHK moves to Golden Bear Industrial Centre, Chai Wan Kok Street, Tsuen Wan.

1982
  • Yasushi Iwabuchi is appointed Managing Director.
  • Canon launches the Electronic Typewriter in Hong Kong.
1984
  • Canon launches its first Video product in Hong Kong.
1985
  • CHK establishes a China Trade department to explore opportunities in the China market.
  • Canon launches its first Printers in Hong Kong.
  • Jardine installs 800 Canon PW100A Printers in the newly unified Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
1986
  • Noboru Tachibana is appointed Managing Director.
  • Canon launches its first Laser Beam Printer in Hong Kong.
  • CHK's Administration & Marketing departments are relocated to the Peninsula Centre, Tsim Sha Tsui.
1987
  • Canon launches its first EOS Camera in Hong Kong.
  • The unmistakable Canon neon sign is turned on at the Hong Kong Arts Centre.

      

  • Canon launches its Still Video System in Hong Kong.
1988
  • CHK purchases a warehouse at 21/F Wyler Centre, Kwai Chung.
  • CHK establishes a Copier Technical Support Department to provide Copier training support to the agents.
  • CHK's staff size passes the 50 mark.
1989
  • CHK's Logistics Division moves to Wyler Centre, Kwai Chung.
1990
  • Canon launches the NeXT Computer in Hong Kong.
  • CHK's head office moves to Mirror Tower, Tsim Sha Tsui following staff expansion.
  • CHK exhibits at CENIT ASIA' 90.
  • CHK's staff size breaks through the 100 barrier.
1991
  • CHK's sales hit US$ 100 million.
  • Naoki Fukushima is appointed Managing Director.
1992
  • Canon introduces its Toner Cartridge Recycling Program in Hong Kong.
  • The Canon Electronic Business Machine (H.K.) Co. Ltd. (CEBM) is established in Hong Kong and provides the global headquarters for Canon’s Calculator business.
1993
  • Mr. R. Katu attends MRA Economical Discussion in Guangzhou.
  • Canon participates at Computer Expo 93.
  • CEBM assumes control the calculator business effective July 1st.
1994
  • Takashi Oshiyama is appointed Deputy Managing Director.
  • CHK promotes its Toner Cartridge Recycling Program at the Green Expo.
  • CHK's sales pass US$ 200 million.
1995
  • The company is renamed Canon Hongkong Company Ltd.
1996
  • CHK sets up representative offices to coordinate its marketing activities in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.
  • CHK establishes Canon International Trading (Shanghai) Co. Ltd. to supply parts for customers in China.
  • Canon Inc. Hong Kong Representative Office is registered as an independent company and renamed Canon Engineering Hong Kong Co. Ltd.
1997
  • Canon HK establishes its Canon Marketing (Hong Kong) Co. Ltd. (CMHK) at Mirror Tower, Tsim Sha Tsui as subsidiary for the Hong Kong and Macau markets. Hirotaka Kakita is appointed Managing Director.



  • CHK celebrates its 25th anniversary.

      

  • CHK moves to Lippo Sun Plaza, Tsim Sha Tsui.
1998
  • CMHK begins operations.
  • The Canon showroom is opened at G/F of Mirror Tower.
1999
  • Kohtaro Miyagi is appointed Managing Director of CHK.
  • CHK moves to Hong Kong Club Building, Central.

2001
  • Yoroku Adachi is appointed Managing Director of CHK.
  • Canon Marketing Taiwan Co. Ltd. (CMTW) is established in Taipei.
2002
  • Hideki Ozawa is appointed President & CEO of CMHK.



  • Canon establishes its Digital School.
  • Canon China Co. Ltd. assumes control of all representative offices business.
2003
  • CHK and CMHK merge and become Canon Hongkong Co. Ltd (Canon Hongkong).
  • Canon Hongkong's Domestic Sales Office moves to Metropolis Tower, Hunghom.



  • Canon Hongkong donates HKD 1.5 million to the Hong Kong Hospital Authority to support the fight against SARS.

      

  • Canon Hongkong launches "Hong Kong Ka Yau" Campaign to cheer up Hong Kong economy.
  • Canon Hongkong becomes Diamond Member of World Wide Fund For Nature Hong Kong.
  • Canon showroom moves to Metropolis Mall, Hunghom named "Canon Digital Magic Plaza".



  • Canon Hongkong carries its first largest scale exposition ever organized by a single consumer electronics brand in Hong Kong.



  • Canon Hongkong obtains ISO 9001:2000 certificate.

      
2004
  • Kensaku Konishi is appointed President & CEO



  • Jun 04, Canon Neon Sign on top of Hong Kong Art Centre has been removed.
  • Canon Hongkong has agreed to become the Kitchee Football Team's principal commercial partners by providing comprehensive sponsorship including long-term scholarship scheme to nurture talented young footballers in HK.

      

  • Canon Hongkong organized its second sole brand exhibition "Canon Expo 2004 – Image Perfection" at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Center



  • Dec 2004, Canon Hongkong has been selected as a "Caring Company 2004 / 05" by the Hong Kong Council of Social Service

2005
  • Canon Hongkong obtains ISO 14001 Standard Certificate for environmental conservation from Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency

      

  • Canon Hongkong Office System Solution Division organized its first "Ask Canon" solution show to share the company's latest invention in office systems technology and product series.



  • Canon Hongkong obtains Occupational Health & Safety Assessment Specification OHSAS 18001, a certificate for health and safety management system.

2006

  • Mar 2006, Canon First Revolving Neon Sign in Asia was established at the Oterprise Square, Tsim Sha Tsui. A grand light up ceremony was also launched for celebration.




  • Apr 2006, certificated with COPC-2000® CSP standard by fulfilling the world class standard of service efficiency and quality.



  • May 2006, 3 separate management systems, ISO 9001, ISO14001 & OHSAS18001, successfully combined into Quality, Environmental, Health and Safety (QEHS) management system certified by SGS.



  • Canon Hongkong Business Information Solution Division organized "Canon Answers" Solution Show in June 2006 to demonstrate how Canon solution improve office efficiency



  • Aug 2006, Canon Hongkong Consumer Imaging & Information Showroom - "Canon Image2" and Customer Care Center moved to Oterprise Square in Tsim Sha Tsui.



  • Dec 2006, Canon LED Wall was established at the Oterprise Square under the Canon revolving Neon Sign. 420 LED dots have been installed in 14 rows to form a LED panel running different Canon messages to Hong Kong people.

2007

  • Mr. Kenji Kobayashi is appointed as President & CEO



  • CHK has been awarded the Caring Company Logo 2004/07 by the Hong Kong Council of Social Service in recognition of CHK's commitment to corporate citizenship.



  • 1 July 2007, Canon revolving neon sign is invited to join the "Symphony of Light" and Pyrotechnic Show by Hong Kong Tourism Commission to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Hong Kong SAR.



  • Aug 2007, CHK set up the Free Pick Up Services for collection of Used Toner Cartridges in order to enhance the Toner Cartridges Recycling Programme.



  • 23-25 Nov 2007, CHK carried "Canon Expo 2007 - Digital Photography & High Definiation Images Expo" with the theme "Life on Canon Live" at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center. It showcased Canon's latest digital products and advanced technologies emerged with creative set up like a 10M x 10M Ice Rink and 3D Theatre.



  • Dec 2007, Canon Pro Solution Hub was established on the 17/F of Oterprise Square providing the best one-stop Canon digital imaging solution, including Canon flagship DSLR models, high definition video camcorders and inkjet printers to professional customers.



2008

  • CHK was awarded the Caring Company Logo for consecutive 4 years since 2004 by the Hong Kong Council of Social Service.



  • Feb 2008, CHK set up representative office in Macau for sales of office equipments and solution softwares.



  • Jul 2008, Mr. Kazutada Kobayashi is appointed as President & CEO of Canon Hongkong.
