Tag: EOS 7D Mark II, EOS Movie, Dual Pixel CMOS AF, Movie Servo AF, Custom Movie Servo AF

Canon’s “Dual Pixel CMOS AF”, which was firstly introduced in EOS 70D, received a very big echo from the market. The “Movie Servo AF” function has made video shooting much more easier by its powerful tracking ability, so users can focus on composition more and let the camera did the AF and tracking. Now in EOS 7D Mark II, this technology is further evolved to “Custom Movie Servo AF” where users can customize the AF characteristics during movie shooting. The customization of “Movie Servo AF Speed” and “Movie Servo AF Tracking Sensitivity” delivers an effect that is as professional as focus puller and let users to design more screen effect for their movies.

*Custom Movie Servo AF is only available to EOS 7D Mark II (as of 1st April, 2015)

Custom Movie Servo AF Speed - Professional Focus Pulling

The Movie Servo AF Speed can be set by adjusting the lens driving speed according to creative intention.
Please play the video to feel the real effect of different speed setting.

Explanation of menu function

• When Active:

  • [Always on] sets the AF adjustment speed to take effect all times for movie shooting (before and during movie shooting).
  • [During shooting] sets the AF adjustment speed to take effect only during movie shooting.
• AF Speed: You can set the AF adjustment speed (focus transition speed) to one of five levels, from standard speed to slow, to obtain the desired effect.

Custom Movie Servo AF Tracking Sensitivity – Set the AF response

You can change the Movie Servo AF’s tracking sensitivity to one of five levels. This affects the responsiveness of AF tracking sensitivity when AF point loses the subject, such as during panning or when an obstacle enters the AF point, this tells the camera how to handle and control the AF change.

Explanation of menu function

• [Locked on: -2 / Locked on: -1]

  • This setting makes the camera less inclined to track a different subject if the AF points loses the original subject.
  • The -2 setting makes the camera less inclined to track a different subject than the -1 setting.
  • It is effective when you want to prevent the AF points from rapidly tracking something that is not the intended subject during panning or when an obstacle enters the AF points.
• [Responsive: +2 / Responsive: +1]
  • This makes the camera more responsive when tracking a subject that covers the AF point.
  • The +2 setting makes the AF point more responsive than +1.
  • It is effective when you want to keep tracking a moving subject as its distance from the camera changes, or to rapidly focus on another subject.

Enabling “Custom Movie Servo AF” by having the correct setting on EOS 7D Mark II and a compatible lens

• Please set the EOS 7D Mark II to the following conditions:

  • [Movie Servo AF] is set to [Enable]
  • [AF Method] is set to [FlexiZone – Single Point]
  • Use a lens that is compatible with slow focus transition during movie shooting (Please see the table below)
• Below settings or conditions will make ”Movie Servo AF” or “Custom Movie Servo AF” unavailable
  • If [AF Method] is set to [Face + Tracking] or [FlexiZone - Multi], the AF adjustment speed will be equivalent to the [Standard] setting.
  • If [AF Method] is set to [Face + Tracking] or [FlexiZone - Multi], the tracking sensitivity will be equivalent to the [0] setting.
  • If a lens that is not compatible to slow focus transition is used, the AF adjustment speed will be equivalent to the [Standard] setting.
  • If Full HD 50p/59.94p is set, Movie Servo AF and Custom Movie Servo AF will not function
