Capture a Heart Warming Winter

Winter is a joyful, festive time of the year. It reminds us of Christmas, snow, travels and holidays. Whether you will be busy partying or traveling around the world, it would be nice to capture all the joyful and heart warming moments with high quality photos.

Use of Starburst Sun for a Warm Winter Touch

When it comes to winter photography, most people can only think of “White”. When facing a monotonous scenery, and to add a warm winter touch and atmosphere, we can include the sun in the composition and create a more impressive result with the use of bright starburst sunshine.

To capture radiant starburst sunshine, we suggest to use a tripod and a small aperture such as f/18 or f/22. A small aperture can help achieve more delicate starburst effect while enriching the overall colors and gradation, capturing a moment of warmness on a cold winter day.

This photo was taken in the freezing cold of Hokkaido winter. Although there was only a bunch of trees standing on the heavy snow land, the sunny weather and blue sky have liven up the image. We suggest to use a small aperture and low ISO setting to prevent over-exposure. The sun shining into the lens has added drama to this otherwise uneventful scene, resulting in a heart warming winter photo.

Use of Contrasting Objects to Complement the Snow

When shooting in a snowy environment lack of strong contrast, we can extract elements from the nature to enrich the photo. With good use of the sense of depth and contrast created by including the surrounding scenery and objects, we can not only retain the faithful colors of snow, but also enrich the photo’s content and create visual impact.

For example, we can include the lush greenery in front of the snow mountain to create a color contrast. This can leave the snow mountain a prominent presence while giving the photo a meaning. Generally speaking, the plants wither when the snow comes. This photo capturing the lush greenery thus gives us a feeling of vitality.

Since the snow and leaves will both reflect sunlight, we should consider using a polarizing filter to eliminate the reflections off the leaves and snow. This can boost color saturation of the grassland, adding a warm touch to the snowy photo.

Use of Seasonal Elements for a Heart Warming Result

To add a stronger festive winter atmosphere to the photos, we can make use of different seasonal elements such as Christmas tree, warm colors (red, orange, yellow), scarves, sweaters, etc. to outstand the warmness and happy festive mood.

The kids’ smiles add a nice and heart warming touch to the photo. Kids and animals remind us of vitality, and the kids’ orangish-yellow-colored wool hats match perfectly with the color spots on the penguins, thus establishing a strong visual connection.

The photographer took this photo of the kids and animals with a telephoto zoom lens. A fast shutter speed was used to freeze the smiling faces. The use of telephoto zoom lens offers the benefits of perspective compression to make the subject stand out, while also allowing for unobtrusive shooting to capture the most natural expressions.

When taking family photos, it is always a nice idea to include some Christmas decoration in the background as a way to add a touch of warmness with warm-colored objects. Coupled with the kid’s big smile, a heart warming festive winter photo can be easily achieved.

Use of Large Aperture for Feature Shots of Festive Decoration

Many people would decorate their homes to welcome Christmas. With proper use of large aperture lens, we can create stunning close-up feature shots of indoor decoration that show great festive atmosphere.

The use of large aperture can create attractive shallow depth of field. We can also shoot with manual focusing to focus on those objects that give us a warm feeling to help establish a stronger photo theme.
