Cotton Trees, also known as Red Kapok Trees or Hero Trees, are in bloom during March to April. During this period of time, these red, bright flowers decorate the streets and alleys of Hong Kong, and places like Shek Kong Barracks and the flyover outsides Aberdeen Tunnel turn into popular shooting locations for these beautiful flowers.

The hardy, straight-trunked Cotton Trees can grow up to 25m tall. It is therefore hard to get a pleasing shooting angle if you shoot from the ground, and the long shooting distance also makes it difficult to fully capture the various forms of beauty of these flowers. In this article, we’ll take you to Castle Peak Road in Mei Foo - a good location to photograph Cotton Trees in large quantity lining up the road with also a pedestrian bridge nearby which makes it easier to take feature shots of the flowers or birds on branches at close range. This place is also conveniently accessible, making it an ideal destination to spend the weekends.
