Discover Taiwan by Bike - Hou-Fong Bike Path

Originally an abandoned mountain line railroad, the 4.5km-long Hou-Fong Bike Path is now a dedicated bike lane offering a rich variety of landscapes from green fields, Dajia River Steel Bridge, Tunnel No. 9 to the beautiful shore along Dajia River. Since this is a dedicated bike lane, the bikeway is free from traffic and is thus a perfect outdoor location for family with kids.

Hou-Fong Bike Path is accessible by train or bus. For detailed transportation information, you can refer to Taichung Travel Net or the official website of Hou-Fong Bike Path. From there you can choose the way of transportation that best suits you. This time we will start at Fengyuan. You can find many bike rental shops there. Rental fee is cheaper than Hong Kong and it’s your call to choose either a regular bike or an electric bike.

After getting your bike, ride along the bikeway and you will soon arrive at Dajia River Steel Bridge. Built during the period when Taiwan was governed by Japan, this bridge was completed in 1908. It’s a unique experience to ride your bike across the steel bridge that is full of history. Use an ultra-wide angle lens to capture the amazing steel construction of the bridge

On both sides of the bridge you can see Dajia River. Fengyuan is a flat terrain and therefore you can see very far from the bridge. You will arrive at Tunnel No. 9 after crossing the bridge

Tunnel No. 9 was a train tunnel. Built in 1908 and with a total length of 1.2km, it was the longest tunnel on the Old Mountain Line of Taiwan Railway. It is now transformed to a dedicated bike lane so that locals and tourists can feel what it’s like to go through a tunnel with hundred years of history

Although with lighting facilities, the tunnel is pretty dark inside. Adjust to a higher ISO when shooting to ensure proper exposure

The bikeway is flat and smooth after passing the tunnel. Shots of yourself riding the bike under the shades of trees can be taken here. Just ensure that the shutter speed is fast enough for a good shot

This section of the path offers a wide-open view. You can enjoy the blue sky while cycling
Hou-Fong Bike Path ends at Houli Horse Ranch. Although the total length is only 4.5km, Hou-Fong Bike Path offers a rich variety of sceneries and photographic topics. It is also connected to Dongfeng Bicycle Green Way to form a long, charming bike lane which allows you to go 12km further.
