Portrait Photography with EOS Digital Interchangeable Lens Camera

Lighting control, portraiture composition and how to work with models are essential elements to produce quality portraits. This course provides an all-rounded learning experience with both theory and hands-on practice of portraits shooting outdoors and in studio. You are able to advance your portrait photography skills in a matter of minutes!

The course consists of three sessions, which equip you with the knowledge on photography theory and portraiture composition. You will look at the characteristics of light, how to recognise, ultimately control the lights as well as background setup and how to work with models in studio practical session. EF lenses and EOS System accessories are available for loan in outdoor practical session. You will be comfortable with handling your camera and explore how to shoot successful portraits using natural lights for such consideration as use of reflector and the background choice. You will also learn to work on your photos with software, apply basic adjustments and corrections in the third lesson, in order to create portraits with your own style.

By the end of this course, you will be able to print out your great shot in A4 size for free!

Course Outline

Suitable to:

  • Have good knowledge of functionalities of your personal EOS Digital Interchangeable Lens Camera or have completed our “Basic Operation of EOS Digital SLR Camera” course or “Basic Operation of EOS M Digital Camera” course
  • Ownership of EOS DSLR camera or EOS M digital camera and completed online product warranty registration
  • Participant should bring his own camera and memory card to the lesson
  • Participant should be 18 years old or above

Course Outline:

Part I - Portrait Photography Theory and Studio Practice (4 hours)

  • Understanding aperture, focal length and zoom range
  • Relationship between depth of field and portrait photography
  • Leaning to control depth of field
  • Basics of portraiture composition and framing
  • Introduction to studio lighting
  • Lighting set-ups for classic portrait
  • Creating different lighting styles with angles and contrast
  • Focal length vs. portrait lens
  • How to work with models
  • Hands-on practice


Part II - Outdoor Practice (3 hours)
Practical location: Lai Chi Kok Park

  • Outdoor portrait photography techniques
  • Learning to exploit good light and choosing the right color temperature
  • Outdoor portraiture composition and framing
  • Making use of natural light
  • Dealing with contrast with reflector and flash
  • Hands-on practice with models


Part III - Digital Portrait Photo Editing (3 hours)
*No laptop will be provided. You are welcome to bring your laptop with you to the lesson.

  • How to select your best shot
  • Image processing & cropping
  • Exposure correction with level & curve tools
  • White balance & color correction
  • Clone tools
  • Image sharpening & softening
  • Special effects
  • Creating portraits with your own unique style
  • Photo discussion

Terms and Conditions

  1. Participant should bring his own cameras and memory card (if applicable) to the classes.
  2. The transfer of classes will not be accepted within 7 days prior to the commencement of the course. Participant is not permitted to transfer into a different course and transfer will be subject to availability. Any participant who cannot attend the lesson is considered as waiving his own attendance. Please note, no refund will be provided to absentee after confirmation has been made.
  3. No refund will be made once payment is received.
  4. For the following extreme weather conditions, classes will be cancelled and participants will be notified of the alternative arrangements.
    • During Class
      Typhoon Signal No.8 or above is Valid - Class Cancelled
      Rainstorm Black Warning is Valid - Resume Normal
    • On the Day of Class - 12:00nn
      Typhoon Signal No.8 or above is Valid - Class Cancelled
      Typhoon Signal No.8 or above is Lowered - Resume Normal

  5. Should the weather be unstable on the day of the course, Canon Institute of Creative Imaging may have special arrangement according to the enironment and weather of the day of the course. If the class is cancelled due to unstable weather, Canon Institute of Creative Imaging will notify the participants accordingly for the make up class arrangements. Any student who cannot attend the make up lesson is considered as waiving his own attendance.
  6. Canon reserves the right to cancel classes due to extreme weather conditions, special circumstances and insufficient enrollments. If so, participants will be notified of the alternative arrangements.
  7. If participants are found vandalizing school property or that of other students, behaving destructively or hinder the progress of the lesson then Canon will have the right to invalidate participant's status.
  8. Canon reserves the right to make any alterations to the course details when necessary without prior notice.
