The Creative Image Room’s Sharing Session on Initial Evaluation and Research Findings cum Award Presentation Ceremony

Canon Hongkong (CHK) and The Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd) collaborated over the past academic year on The Creative Image Room project, injecting the imaging technologies in conventional visual arts classes. CHK and HKIEd hosted a sharing session on 5th September 2015 to conclude the teaching and learning experiences throughout the year, with students’ creative artworks showcased at Domain Mall in Yau Tong from 3rd to 9th September, 2015.

Introducing imaging technologies such as photography and printing to conventional visual arts classes, Canon Hongkong and HKIEd brought 10 creative image classes to 10 local primary and secondary schools during the academic year 2014/15. 10 student teachers from HKIEd’s Department of Cultural and Creative Arts, Bachelor of Education (Honours) (Visual Arts) brought inspiration to participating students with visual arts knowledge and skills.

Students completed a final artwork towards the end of the project. Using “reflection” as theme, students applied what they learned from the Creative Image sessions on the final artwork. All submission was then subject to a judging panel, who selected 3 award winners for “The Best Imagery Artworks”, which went to Wong Kwai Yu from S.K.H. Holy Cross Primary School, Mak Tsz Kit from POCA Wong Siu Ching Secondary School, as well as Ngai Wai Ki from Yan Chai Hospital No.2 Secondary School. As an appreciation to schools who demonstrated creativity at best throughout the project, “The Best Creative Room” was awarded to Stewards Pooi Tun Secondary School and Sha Tin Wai Dr. Catherine F. Woo Memorial School respectively for the secondary and primary school category.

HKIEd conducted a survey with more than 200 participating teachers and students. More than 80% of students believed the inclusion of creative imaging elements in visual arts curriculum enhances their knowledge in visual arts, as well as their interests to learn and their development of creative thinking. More than 80% of the visual arts teachers who participated in the project believed that imaging elements such as photography helps to boost students’ confidence in creative works, and claimed that they would try to apply the creative imaging knowledge and skills in the future. Such findings has indicated the essentiality of imaging technologies, such as photography and printing, in visual arts education in the near future, and meanwhile has provided a strong academic support on the future reform of related curriculum.

In addition to the sponsorship of photography, printing and scanning equipment tailored for students’ needs, CHK passed on its expertise in imaging to student teachers at HKIEd, who used these knowledge to inspire participating schools and students. This would be a perfect demonstration of CHK’s passion to “empower through imaging”.

Professor John Lee Chi-kin, Vice President (Academic) of HKIEd said that, injecting digital imaging elements in conventional visual art classes does not only encourage more creative thinking, but also students’ proactivity in learning and their communication skills, bringing benefits to them beyond visual arts lessons.
