Canon Hongkong Participated in “Tai O Cultural and Ecological Tour” to Experience the Traditions and Sustainable Development of the Fishing Village

In a hope of strengthening CHK staff’s engagement to the community, Canon Hongkong (CHK) proactively participates in an array of Social Awareness Programmes through the ACT Social Awareness Network of HKCSS.

On September 12, 25 participants comprising CHK staffs and their family members and friends joined “Tai O Cultural and Ecological Tour” organized by Tai O Cultural and Ecological Integrated Resource Centre (CERC). Guided by Tai O residents, the cultural walk has provided a great chance for participants to understand Tai O Fishing Village from a cultural and historical prospective. Besides, participants have also learned the intelligent workmanship of villagers by experiencing the making of “salty eggs” and “soybean congee” – two kinds of traditional food in Tai O – in the iconic stilt houses. In additions, through the sharing by the CERC representative, participants have gained great insights on the business vision, operation models and challenges of the centre, as a social enterprise working for preserving the community’s heritage through local tourism.

Established by Hong Kong Young Women’s Christian Association since 2006, CERC is a social enterprise which encourages sustainable development of community by utilizing social capitals derived from local culture and ecology. The “Tai O Cultural and Ecological Tour” project – as one of the best demonstrations of sustainable development of community through local tourism – enables local Tai O villagers to transform their traditional skills into valuable assets by taking up the roles of docents and instructors for workshops, and meanwhile serve a number of 8,000 public visitors every year by introducing them the beauty of Tai O culture and ecology.

The decent, who is a local Tai O villager, introduced the history and features of the centuries-old Kwan Tai Temple.

Participants experienced the making of “salty eggs”– a kind of traditional food in Tai O – in the iconic stilt houses, and learned the intelligent workmanship of Tai O villagers.

Participants took a group photo at Tai O Cultural and Ecological Integrated Resource Centre before the end of the fruitful tour.
