The 5th Canon x McDull Inter-school Ink Cartridge Recycling Competition cum Coloring and Design Contest Award Presentation Ceremony
2016-JUN-24

The 5th Canon x McDull Inter-school Ink Cartridge Recycling Competition
cum Coloring and Design Contest Award Presentation Ceremony

Canon Hongkong Company Limited (CHK) organized the 5th “Canon x McDull Inter-school Ink Cartridge Recycling Competition” cum “Colouring Design Contest” Award Presentation Ceremony at the Fortune Metropolis in Hung Hom on 18th June 2016, welcoming over 70 students and teachers. Meanwhile, the co-located Instant Photo Shoot and Print Service with McDull Mascot as well as Canon Creative Park Workshop allows participants to enjoy a delighting afternoon and at the same time to express their creativity to make different kinds of 3D paper artworks, including animals, vehicles and thank you cards.

In line with Canon’s corporate philosophy “Kyosei”, CHK advocates a green product lifecycle in every process of our operations. Since 2009, CHK launched “Ink Cartridge Recycling Programme” in town and invited the famous cartoon character “McDull” as the Programme’s ambassador. There are currently around 260 recycling boxes in the territories to facilitate collections of used ink cartridges.

Canon believes the young generation group definitively plays an important role towards ‘sustainable development’. In 2011, CHK introduced the Ink Cartridge Recycling Program to local education sector, and debuted “Canon x McDull Inter-school Ink Cartridge Recycling Competition” and “Colouring Design Contest” for local primary and secondary schools. In order to further promote the concept of recycling in all-rounded perspectives among schools, CHK also arranged 24 sessions of “Green Workshop” for the participating schools.

In the academic year of 2015-16, there are a total of 228 schools joining the “Inter-school Ink Cartridge Recycling Competition”, with 8,425* ink cartridges being collected and recycled. For the “Coloring and Design Contest”, a total of 136 schools participated with altogether 14,891 artworks received. “I am delighted to see so many drawings of McDull and his friends. The overall level of students’ artworks and awareness of environmental protection are increased, I am very impressed and encouraged. The champion artworks in both primary and secondary categories are full of humour and adorable, I am very happy for the whole judging process.” said Ms. Alice Mak, the creator of McDull and the judge for the “Coloring and Design Contest”.

The honourable presenters of award of the ceremony: Mr. Vincent Cheung – Senior Director and General Manager of Corporate Communications Division and Ms. Candy Mau – Senior Manager of Corporate Communications Division, expressed their sincere gratitude to all participating schools and students for their keen support, which is vital for the wide spread of the message of ink cartridge recycling among schools in Hong Kong.

The collected ink cartridges are not used for re-filling of ink but decomposed into 4 parts: metal (4%), plastic (87.7%) ink residual (6.6%) and sponge (1.7%). All metals and plastics would be used as raw materials of other products. Although ink residual and sponge would be disposed, their much compressed sizes would much reduce burden to the landfills. Since launch and updated as of 31st December 2015, the Programme has collected 129,552 pcs of ink cartridges, recycled over 3.2 tons of plastics. It helps to reduce over 5 tons of CO2 emission, which requires 220 trees to absorb in a year.
