EOS-1D X Firmware 2.0 (Part III) - More Convenient Exposure Control
Tag: EOS-1D X, Auto ISO, C.fn

Auto ISO has become a frequently-used feature for many advanced DSLR users. If used in Av or Tv exposure modes, it allows the camera to adjust ISO speed as lighting in a scene changes, while maintaining fairly consistent apertures and shutter speeds. And, if used in Manual exposure mode, serious shooters have quickly discovered it’s an important ally in maintaining precisely the same shutter speeds and apertures, while allowing users to freely shoot even in changing lighting conditions. However, there is room for improvement to Auto ISO, responding to customer feedback and request, the firmware 2.0.3 now adds the new features for Auto ISO.

Exposure Compensation is added to Manual Exposure Mode with Auto ISO Enabled
When using Auto ISO and Manual Exposure mode, the ISO speed is set by EOS-1D X camera base on standard exposure, user has little control over the exposure effect. Now, exposure compensation can be set in Manual Exposure Mode with Auto ISO enabled. This allows users more control over the exposure effect in particular environment. This new exposure compensation can be adjusted by 2 ways:

Adjust in Quick Control Screen
Press [Q] button to activate the Quick Control screen, and then select “Exposure Compensation”.

Customize [SET] button to adjust Exposure Compensation
Assign the new customization function of the [SET] button. While holding the SET button, turn the Main Dial to apply compensation level.

Enhanced [Minimum Shutter Speed] setting

Auto ISO is useful for photographing sports in fluctuating lighting condition, however, professional photographers reflected that the shutter speed set by Auto ISO is too slow in Av exposure mode when using with super-tele lens and shooting extremely fast-moving subject. In firmware 2.0.3, enhanced [Minimum Shutter Speed] setting in Auto ISO allows a minimum shutter speed from 1/500 second to 1/8000 second. This increases the chance of having sharp photos when using with super-tele lens and shooting extremely fast-moving subject.

[Minimum Shutter Speed] can now be set to 1/8000 second

New [Same Expo. for New Aperture] setting
In addition to enhanced Auto ISO functions, a new [Same Expo. for New Aperture] setting is added to the camera custom functions. In occasions that the aperture value may change, such as exchanging a lens with different maximum/minimum aperture or attaching/detaching an extender, this new function will automatically change the ISO speed or shutter speed (choose either one) to maintain the same exposure in Manual Exposure Mode. The advantage of this new feature is to prevent incorrect exposure due to lens changing or attaching extender in a hurry, so that user can shoot immediately without adjusting the exposure combinations.
