EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R Overview
Tag: EOS 5DS, EOS 5DS R

The new EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R come with a shocking 50.6-megapixel ultra-high-resolution Full-frame CMOS sensor, targeting professionals and advanced amateur pursuing ever-higher resolving power.

50.6 Megapixels Ultra High Resolution image
EPS 5DS and 5DS R are built-in with a newly-developed ultra-high-pixel Full-frame Canon CMOS sensor with approximately 50.6 megapixel which utilized the gapless microlens technology and the semiconductor manufacturing process is refined to ensure low noise level and wide dynamic range under ultra-high-pixel resolution. The model EOS 5DS R is designed with the effect of optical low pass filter cancelled1 to maximize the sharpness and clarity of the ultra-high-pixel resolving power. 5FPS high speed continuous shooting at full resolution is achieved by the CMOS sensor’s 16-channel high speed readout. Both models are equipped with Dual "DIGIC 6" digital image processors, enabling a standard ISO range from 100 to 6400 (expandable to L:50 and H: 12800).

New designs and functions to ensure sharpness and details in ultra-high-pixel image
Camera-shake blur has a negative effect on image quality, and this effect becomes more apparent as the number of pixels increases. The main cause of camera-shake blur is the collision brought by the movement of the main mirror. As a countermeasure, both 5DS and 5DS R adopt a new Mirror Vibration Control System (MVCS) which is a mirror control mechanism driven by motor and cams. This mechanism suppresses camera-shake blurring due to mirror motion in ultra-high-pixel image. Also, the rigidity of the tripod socket and surrounding parts have been improved to reduce camera vibrations caused by mirror motion.

New Picture Style ‘Fine Detail’ has been added to emphasize fine edges and material textures brought by the ultra high resolution. This is especially useful for images that do not require post-production and saved as JPEG directly.

61-point AF system that achieves high AF precision for ultra high resolution
Eos 5DS and 5DS R use a high precision 61-point2 High Density Reticular AF sensor as found in EOS 5D Mark III with maximum 41-point cross-type AF points. It features a 150,000-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor with 252-zone metering and detects Red (R), Green (G), Blue (B) and near-infrared light (NIR) information which enables more accurate analysis from "EOS Scene Detection System". EOS iSA (Intelligent Subject Analysis) system is also available to detect the subjects by face data and color information to enhance auto exposure, autofocus and auto white balance under different light sources.

EOS iTR (Intelligent Tracking Recognition) AF
EOS 5DS and 5DS R are equipped with EOS iTR (Intelligent Tracking Recognition) AF function that uses Face Detection and color information from EOS iSA system to track recognized subject in optical viewfinder and keeps the subject in focus throughout the scene.

A host of new functions first seen in EOS to enhance operability
Apart from the 50.6-megapixels ultra-high resolution, EOS 5DSand 5DS R are also equipped with a lot of new functions. Some of them are first seen in the EOS series to make the camera more versatile.

Features an optical viewfinder with 100% coverage with 0.71x magnification. It also adopts the "Intelligent Viewfinder II" with on-demand shooting information display

Various shooting information can be viewed inside the viewfinder

Both EOS 6DS and 5DS R are equipped with "Anti-Flicker Shooting" where the AE system detects the cycle of flickering light sources such as fluorescent light and mercury light, the shutter release timing is then adjusted to ensure more consistent exposure and color during shooting.
New customizable “Quick Control screen” which allows user to display and arrange the on-screen items freely based on personal preference
New ‘Time Lapse Movie’ function, a series of still images shot over a specific interval can be automatically saved to a Full HD time lapse movie3
Supports Movie Servo AF
Built-in with "Interval Timer" and "Bulb Timer"
Dual Card Slots supporting both CF Card (compatible with UDMA 7) and SD Card (compatible with SDHC/ SDXC UHS-I standard).
It supports USB 3.0 digital terminal to enable fast transfer of images. A cable protector is also included.

Professional and Reliable body design
The shutter units of EOS 5DS and 5DS R both have 150,000-cycle durability4. The camera is built with rigid Magnesium-alloy body and features dust and water resistance design5.

1The Probability of moiré and false color occurrence is higher in EOS 5DSR when compared to EOS 5DS.
2The number of available focus points depends on the lens attached
3Maximum 3600 exposures, maximum 2 minutes (NTSC) or 2 minutes 24 second (PAL) timelapse movie can be shot.
4Shutter durability may vary depending on usage and environmental conditions
5Not recommended to use in the rain
