Explore the Hidden Gems of the Photography Journey

Kunimigaoka

Awarded one star by the Michelin Green Guide Japan — is a breathtaking viewpoint overlooking the Takachiho Basin from 513 meters above sea level.

At dawn, mist drifts across the landscape, layering the mountains in a scene reminiscent of an ink painting. As the sun rises, light pierces through the clouds, creating ever‑changing moments of beauty.

An experience worth waking early for, to capture fleeting light and atmosphere through your lens.

Amanoyasukawara

According to legend, the sun goddess Amaterasu once retreated into the sacred cave of Amanoiwato, plunging the world into darkness and chaos. This tranquil riverbed, Amanoyasukawara, is believed to be where the gods gathered to seek a way to restore light to the world.

Scattered throughout the riverbed are countless stone stacks, an enduring tradition where visitors make wishes in hopes of them coming true. Surrounded by nature, the space carries a quiet, almost otherworldly presence.

As you stand within this sacred landscape, how will you capture a moment that exists between myth and reality through your lens?

Takachiho Gorge

Takachiho Gorge, shaped by volcanic activity from Mount Aso, stretches over 7 kilometers, with towering cliffs rising 80 to 100 meters high. Recognized as both a National Place of Scenic Beauty and a Natural Monument, it stands as one of Japan's most iconic natural landscapes.

As part of this journey, a boat ride is specially arranged, allowing you to venture deep into the gorge and experience its scale up close. Discover Manai Falls and the striking basalt columns from a unique perspective, where light and moving water create layers of ever‑changing scenery. In this interplay of light, motion and texture, capture images that reveal the true depth and power of this natural wonder.

Manai Falls

Recognized as one of Japan's Top 100 waterfalls, stands as the iconic centerpiece of Takachiho Gorge. From a height of approximately 17 meters, clear water cascades down the rock face, framed by the striking, vertical basalt columns, forming a richly layered and dramatic scene.

According to legend, this area was once without water when the gods descended upon the earth. It is said that Amenomurakumono Mikoto brought forth the sacred waters of "Ame no Manai" to this place, giving life and spiritual significance to the gorge. As light filters through the falls and mist rises into the air, the landscape takes on a dreamlike quality, ephemeral and ever‑shifting.

How will you capture this flowing yet sacred moment through your lens?

Amaterasu Railway

This popular scenic railway offers a unique way to experience Takachiho. On this 30‑minute journey, travel through valleys and natural landscapes, with breathtaking views unfolding along the way.

Pulled by a locomotive powered by biodiesel fuel, the open‑air SUPER CART provides an unobstructed view of the surroundings. Sections of the carriage floor are fitted with reinforced glass, revealing the tracks beneath and adding a dynamic layer to the journey. As the landscape moves around you, shift your perspective and capture the rhythm of the scenery in motion.

Takachiho Night Kagura

An exclusive private session, specially arranged for this photography journey. Held at the Kagura Hall within Takachiho Shrine, this experience is reserved solely for tour participants, allowing you to photograph freely from different angles without obstruction.

Takachiho Night Kagura, with over 800 years of history, is recognized as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. Rooted in the myth of Amaterasu, it tells the story of light returning to the world through sacred performance.

Within this interplay of light, shadow and storytelling, capture a cultural experience that bridges the human and the divine. You can create one of the most unforgettable moments of your photography journey.
