Overlooking Discovery Bay from Lo Fu Tau Country Trail

Located in the Northeast of Lantau Island near Discovery Bay, Lo Fu Tau is named because of a giant stone on the top of the hill resembling the shape of a tiger’s head. A walk from Discovery Bay to Mui Wo Pier via Lo Fu Tau takes approximately 2.5 hours, and along the trail are panoramic views of Discovery Bay, grass fields and interesting giant stones overspreading the mountain. If you come in December, you can even enjoy stunning golden scenery of autumn. This is a great destination for both hiking and photography.

Walk along the traffic road on Discovery Valley Road and you will see a junction to Lo Fu Tau Country Trail
A sight of the tiger’s head from a distance. The rock on the rightmost of the photo is the tiger’s head
Looking back to the planted forest next to the water service reservoir from the Country Trail
Turn to the hill path at this junction
Discovery Bay Reservoir
However short it might be, the path that goes up to the summit of Lo Fu Tau is very steep
It takes about an hour to reach the summit. The paths among the grasses look very much like the stripes on the back of a tiger’s neck. Looking from this direction, the rock resembles a tiger overlooking Discovery Bay on its feet
It was very misty on the day we visited
It takes a little more walk to reach the summit after passing the tiger’s head
Looking back at Discovery Bay from the summit. The most challenging uphill walk is over and after this is a gentle walk down to Mui Wo
There is a large piece of grassland on the ridge
Densely grown silver grasses can be seen and are good subject to photograph
The valley covered in thick mist
“Sword Testing Stone” with a neat crack in the middle, which looks like being cut open by a giant sword
The slopes are gentle and easy to walk

Turn left here to Mui Wo
Silvermine Bay Waterfall
We are almost there at Mui Wo after passing the waterfall. It takes about half an hour to follow the signs and walk to the pier. Be aware that the ferry runs infrequently at every 20-30 minutes. So check the ferry schedule, relax and wind down. Take a rest by the pier and let the breeze blow away the tiredness before the next ferry comes.
