Having been a loyal Canon user for years and joined various photo competitions organized by Canon, Eddie finds it means a lot to him when his photo was selected as the advertising photo and can be viewed by million others. Curious about Eddie’s story and his tips for capturing spectacular landscape shots? Let’s read on.

Fear No Bad Weather – A Surprising Shot after Thunderstorm

Most of us go out to shoot when the weather is good, as it is easy to capture pleasing photos with vivid colors under blue sky and ample sunlight. But this does not mean that we cannot shoot when the weather is bad. This advertisng photo taken on a bad weather day by Eddie serves as a perfect example. “It was raining when I arrived at White Pocket in Arizona. By the time I was thinking that the 3 hours of traveling was gonna be a waste of time, the sky started turning clear. In fact, the light and clouds change more dramatically when the weather is bad. I especially like the scenery after a thunderstorm, when the sky becoming clear and the strong light and shade of clouds adds another dimension of depth to the photos,” Eddie recalled. After the heavy rain, water filled the uneven ground of White Pocket, forming calm ponds to reflect the massif and contributing to a harmonic composition. The blue sky also complemented well with the orangish brown cracks on the rocks, making for an atmospheric photo. There is no reason not to shoot on a bad weather day!

The Best Landscape Shooting Companion: EOS 5DS R, EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM and Tripod

As a landscape photo lover, the equipment Eddie mostly uses are EOS 5DS R and the ultra wide-angle EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM lens. The EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM is Eddie’s favorite lens for capturing landscape like the sun or starry sky. Its 16mm ultra wide focal length offers a 108° angle of view for easy creation of a sense of magnificence and tension to the photos. The lens also delivers an exceptional image quality with high levels of sharpness, clarity and rich colors, and makes a good companion with the EOS 5DS R. Eddie added: “EOS 5DS R delivers exceptional sense of depth and details. With its ultra high resolution and precise and silent focusing, you can see every leaf on the tree in the photo with great details.”

In Eddie’s opinion, in addition to a good camera and lens, a tripod is also an indispensable tool in landscape photography. A tripod can not only ensure image clarity, but also enable the photographer to put thoughts into the photo’s composition during the set-up, like adding a distinguishing subject in the foreground or searching for leading lines.

Use of Ultra Wide Angle of View to Reproduce the Unforgettable Canyon Colors and Landform

With rich travel experience, Eddie has visited an extensive number of landmarks and believes that each place has its own distinctive beauty. Among the various destinations he has visited, the photo journey at Antelope Canyon across the states of Utah and Arizona is his most enjoyable one. He recalled: “The flowing lines and colors of Canyon are truly amazing! Especially during sunrise and sunset when the Canyon is covered in vivid orangish red colors and the winding rocks are transformed into different shapes with the change of light intensity, it is an endless source of inspirations!” Under the ultra wide-angle lens, the radiating lines of Canyon made objects come alive in the photo.
The use of leading lines in the composition and a wide-angle lens can add tension to the photo.

Speaking of the most unforgettable shooting location, Eddie felt really impressed. “The Antelope Canyon is a dream-like paradise for photographers. This place, showing agile lines and ever-changing light and shades, is my muse in photography.” When shooting in the Canyon, a piece of advice from Eddie is to set the camera’s white balance setting to Cloudy or Shade to emphasize the warm tone, which can help reproduce the vivid colors.
EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM utilizes 3 asperical lenses1 and 2 Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) lenses to achieve excellent image quality with exceptional sharpness from the image centre to periphery.

The color change of Canyon was amazing during sunset, and Eddie recalled every moment the color changed from pink to orange. Since the Golden Hour lasts only for a while, Eddie reminds us to seize every second to shoot. Plan ahead, choose the best location and have your camera set beforehand. Then all you have to do is to wait for the perfect moment and lighting to press the shutter.

In addition to the Canyon, Eddie also loves to photograph by the water. “This is because the water surface can produce nice reflection of the surrounding landscape. A long exposure shot can smooth out the water surface and enrich the composition by reflecting the colors of the sky.” When taking landscape photos with water involved, Eddie suggests to use a polarizing filter to reduce reflections off the water surface and produce sharper and brighter colors. Also make sure you shoot at a right angle so that the reflected image can be seen.
