Nightscape Photography with EOS Digital Interchangeable Lens Camera

Known as the “Pearl of the Orient”, Hong Kong has one of the most beautiful city nightscape in the world. Due to the mixed and changing light sources, nightscape photography is a rather difficult topic to many photo beginners.

During hands-on and informative photography course, you will be introduced to the fundamental techniques such as manual exposure, low light photography as well as have the chance to capture stunning shots of Victoria Harbor in Central Ferry Piers. You will be comfortable with handling your camera, and familiarize with nightscape photography techniques in different situations under the guidance of our experienced instructor. You will also explore how to capture successful portraits at night with the assistance of flashlight. And lastly, you will learn how to work on your photos with software, apply basic adjustments and corrections to create professional nighttime photos!

*This course is offered in Cantonese only.

Course Outline

Suitable to:

  • Have good knowledge of functionalities of your personal EOS Digital Interchangeable Lens Camera or have completed our “Basic Operation of EOS Digital SLR Camera” course or “Basic Operation of EOS M Digital Camera” course
  • Ownership of EOS DSLR camera or EOS M digital camera and completed online product warranty registration
  • Participant should bring his own camera, memory card and tripod to the lesson
  • Participant should be 18 years old or above

Course Outline:

Part I - Nightscape Photography Theory and Practice (3 hours)
Practical location: Central Pier No. 10

  • Introduction to low light photography
  • Shooting modes application (Av Mode, M Mode)
  • Live View mode application
  • The right way to use tripod
  • Use of remote switch or remote controller
  • Nightscape photography with HDR
  • Multiple exposure
  • Zooming effects


Part IIA - Outdoor Practice (1 hour)
Practical location: Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade

  • How to use Bulb mode for long exposure photography
  • Light painting
  • Portraits photography at night with flash
  • High ISO bounce flash photography


Part IIB - Digital post-processing (2 hours)

  • Demonstration of RAW photo post-editing with Digital Photo Professional
  • Partial shadow/highlight adjustment
  • White balance correction
  • Noise reduction
  • Correcting lens aberration
  • Multiple exposure effects

Equipment to bring with:

Lesson 1: Canon digital camera, lens, memory card, battery, tripod(suggested height: 120-130cm)

Lesson 2: Canon digital camera, lens, memory card, battery, tripod(suggested height: 120-130cm), external flash*
*Participants without external flash could use camera built-in flash. Tutor would also provide spare external flash for participants to take turns to try. (Note: limited time per person)

Lesson 3: Welcome to bring your laptop and memory card (Optional)

Terms and Conditions

  1. Participant should bring his own cameras and memory card (if applicable) to the classes.
  2. The transfer of classes will not be accepted within 7 days prior to the commencement of the course. Participant is not permitted to transfer into a different course and transfer will be subject to availability. Any participant who cannot attend the lesson is considered as waiving his own attendance. Please note, no refund will be provided to absentee after confirmation has been made.
  3. No refund will be made once payment is received.
  4. For the following extreme weather conditions, classes will be cancelled and participants will be notified of the alternative arrangements.
    • During Class
      Typhoon Signal No.8 or above is Valid - Class Cancelled
      Rainstorm Black Warning is Valid - Resume Normal
    • On the Day of Class - 12:00nn
      Typhoon Signal No.8 or above is Valid - Class Cancelled
      Typhoon Signal No.8 or above is Lowered - Resume Normal
      Rainstorm Black warning is Valid - Class Cancelled
      Rainstorm Black Warning is Lowered - Resume Normal
  5. Should the weather be unstable on the day of the course, Canon Institute of Creative Imaging may have special arrangement according to the enironment and weather of the day of the course. If the class is cancelled due to unstable weather, Canon Institute of Creative Imaging will notify the participants accordingly for the make up class arrangements. Any student who cannot attend the make up lesson is considered as waiving his own attendance.
  6. Canon reserves the right to cancel classes due to extreme weather conditions, special circumstances and insufficient enrollments. If so, participants will be notified of the alternative arrangements.
  7. If participants are found vandalizing school property or that of other students, behaving destructively or hinder the progress of the lesson then Canon will have the right to invalidate participant's status.
  8. Canon reserves the right to make any alterations to the course details when necessary without prior notice.
