You too can enjoy the magic of DSLR photography and learn to tell stories through your images. You bought a new DSLR camera, looked at the user manual that came along with it, and now wondering how the information will help you to take beautiful images. Digital photography can seem daunting, and it always seems like there is a large valley of knowledge that separates you from the freeing experience of photography.

We have broken this course down into theoretical and practical knowledge that every owner of a DSLR needs to know: exposure, shooting modes, white balance, focus setting and how to get the most out of your kit lens. We begin with the best way to hold your camera to prevent motional blur, and take you all the way through the complete process of taking a beautiful picture that tells a great story. Throughout the course, we will explore multiple lighting scenarios from daylight, evening to mixed lighting situations, which will aid you to create different exposure setups to serve as the foundation for taking properly-exposed images. The photography practice begins with lens selection and culminates with the keys of image composition and the important features of your DSLR camera. We will show you how to get the most from your kit lens, and then explore the variety of tools and techniques you will need in creating fun and enjoyable photography experiences.

A new outing segment is added to the workshop. You will be given fun practices and challenges in an outdoor setting that are aimed to equip you to solve problems in everyday photography while brainstorming how to make your images extra special that capture all your imaginations.

  • Venue: Canon Image Square and Kowloon Park
  • Time: 11:30 - 13:30; 14:30-18:30
  • Outdoor Practice: 15:30-18:30 at Kowloon Park
  • Gears: Please bring along your own Canon EOS DSLR camera & lens, battery and memory card.
  • Remarks: Please bring along bottled water, mosquito repellent and sunscreen lotion for outdoor practice if necessary.

 Professional Photographer Cherry Wong

Born in Hong Kong, Cherry Wong was captivated by the glamorous Hollywood photos of Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn when she was young. She started with slide photography and later transitioned into digital photography at York University in Canada. After a few years of shooting, she started feeling frustrated as both her style and photo editing skills did not reach the level she had wanted. She put down her camera for 9 years. During this period, she experienced reverse cultural shock after moving back to Hong Kong. After surviving a serious illness in 2011, she promised herself she would live the life she had always dreamt of. And so, she bought a Canon EOS 5D Mark II, and began shooting again.

Terms and Conditions

  1. Participant should bring his own cameras and memory card (if applicable) to the classes.
  2. The transfer of classes will not be accepted within 7 days prior to the commencement of the course. Participant is not permitted to transfer into a different course and transfer will be subject to availability. Any participant who cannot attend the lesson is considered as waiving his own attendance. Please note, no refund will be provided to absentee after confirmation has been made.
  3. No refund will be made once payment is received.
  4. For the following extreme weather conditions, classes will be cancelled and participants will be notified of the alternative arrangements.
    • During Class
      Typhoon Signal No.8 or above is Valid - Class Cancelled
      Rainstorm Black/Red Warning is Valid - Resume Normal
    • On the Day of Class - 12:00nn
      Typhoon Signal No.8 or above is Valid - Class Cancelled

  5. Should the weather be unstable on the day of the course, Canon Institute of Creative Imaging may have special arrangement according to the enironment and weather of the day of the course. If the class is cancelled due to unstable weather, Canon Institute of Creative Imaging will notify the participants accordingly for the make up class arrangements. Any student who cannot attend the make up lesson is considered as waiving his own attendance.
  6. Canon reserves the right to cancel classes due to extreme weather conditions, special circumstances and insufficient enrollments. If so, participants will be notified of the alternative arrangements.
  7. If participants are found vandalizing school property or that of other students, behaving destructively or hinder the progress of the lesson then Canon will have the right to invalidate participant's status.
  8. Canon reserves the right to make any alterations to the course details when necessary without prior notice.
