KITCHEE AND TUNG CHI YING SCHOOL ESTABLISH PRO FOOTBALL ACADEMY PROGRAM
Kitchee and Yan Chai Hospital Tung Chi Ying Memorial Secondary School will start taking on secondary school students for a European-style football academy.
The local professional football team, Kitchee established a free-of-charge elite training school for children starting at age 6 with FC Barcelona in 2008. Today, Kitchee and TCY have jointly announced the “Professional Footballer Preparatory Program”, with a purpose to implement an educational infrastructure to produce professional football players for Hong Kong.
Mr. Kevin Kobayashi, President and CEO, Canon Hongkong Co. Limited, speaking in his capacity as Kitchee’s major sponsor since 2004, remarked that the Club’s association with the Spanish giant has indeed progressed from strength to strength in the last 2 years and this new effort to establish a football academy program is monumental for the future of Hong Kong football. “Canon shares the same core values with FC Barcelona’s and Kitchee’s youth development program. The search for excellence, both in academics and in football training, will be the foundation of this new program, known as the Professional Footballer Preparatory Program (or the PFP Program), in short,” he said.
Mr. Wong, Chief Executive, Yan Chai Hospital Board, further emphasized the dual purpose of the program and said, “We believe in the development of the whole person for our students. The curriculum and the coaches from Spain will create a football training program which will motivate our students in the PFP Program to excel in academics as well as in discipline.”
The Program is an extension of the FCBEscola Hong Kong model, with an extended football curriculum taught in 6 2-hour sessions per week within the secondary school system. Mr. Stuart Fraser, CEO of Fortis Insurance (Asia) Limited, remarked, “When Fortis first agreed to become the Premier Sponsor for FCBEscola Hong Kong, we have been looking forward to helping Kitchee to develop professional players for the future. I am happy to note that Kitchee has continued its commitment to offer no-cost football training to the talented young players in secondary school, just as our award-winning collaboration of FCBEscola Hong Kong.”
Dr. Tang Kam Hung, the School Supervisor of the Tung Chi Ying School, pointed to the past success of the Tung Chi Ying School, with 5 of the East Asian Games Gold Medalists being the school’s alumni, including Au Yang Yiu Chung and Ip Chun Long. “Our school has agreed to make a bold step towards the future. Our Program will progress from an extra-curricular program to a profession-preparatory one. We will ensure that students in the PFP Program will be ready to become a professional player upon secondary school education.”
In addition to the full secondary school curriculum, the Program also offers international playing tours as part of its football curriculum, at no additional costs to the students. The Program shall also include a co-op apprenticeship program, under which the students will be assigned to participating clubs or District Teams. Every participating member of the Hong Kong Football Association, including Kitchee, will only be allowed to take on no more than 5 apprentices per Form to ensure that the players play regularly under a competitive environment. Mr. Wilson Wong, Chairman of the HKFA Youth Development Taskforce, pointed out that this makes the Program beneficial to Hong Kong football as a whole and welcome Kitchee’s efforts to put the interests of the students above that of the Club.
The application forms of the Program will be available from the website www.ychtcy.edu.hk from 17 May, 2010. All candidates for admission will undergo a selection process conduct by FC Barcelona and Kitchee coaches in the second half of June.
The detailed document describing the PFP Program is available in Chinese and English on the same website today.
