Canon Photo Marathon 2012
HK’s most exciting and renowned annual photography competition
1,500 photographers confront the whole day imaging challenge

(Hong Kong, 7 October 2012) The annual photography competition ‘Canon Photo Marathon’ (CPM), organized by Canon Hongkong Company Limited (CHK), takes place at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) today. Being the 4th year in Hong Kong, CPM aims to cultivate the marathon spirit with passion for photography in the community.

CPM challenges photographic technique, creativity and endurance. Participants are required to finish three themed photo tasks during the competition day. In the 3 hours limited time for each theme, participants are under tremendous pressure with good time management of the 11-hour competition.

In this race-against-the-clock, the competition welcomes both amateur and professional photographers, using Digital Camera with Interchangeable Lenses. The annual competition has attracted overwhelming participation and the total number of enrollments reached the record-high to over 3,000 people for 1,500 participant quotas. Photographers traditionally male-dominated, but with the popularity of digital cameras, many women also fell in love with photography, and we have 1/4 contestants are women.

Mr. Hisahiro Minokawa, President and CEO of CHK kicked off the competition with 1,500 contestants today and celebrated this local once-a-year photography event. Mr. Minokawa said, “We are delighted the CPM applies our expertise in photography together to supporting a sustainable environment and echoes Canon’s corporate philosophy of ‘Kyosei’, he added, “We are looking for the unique Hong Kong scenery through contestants’ eye.”

Imaging CSR
Canon has been advocating “Imaging CSR”, under which Canon applies its expertise in photography and printing on charity – CPM has no exception. Each participant has paid HK$100 as the registration fee, which CHK continues the charity heart and donate all fees of total HK$188,571 to our beneficiary organization S.K.H. St. Christopher’s Home to support its children care program.

A Green Photo Marathon
CPM is a CarbonCare® Event that means this is a carbon neutral event attaining net zero carbon emissions by MR.O - measuring, reducing and offsetting carbon footprint.  CPM’s Carbon Neutral Program is undertaken with the technical support and advisory services of Carbon Care Asia, a provider of integrated Total Carbon Management solutions. Mr. Chong Chan-yau, Board Chairman of Carbon Care Asia said, ‘Canon Hongkong demonstrated as a role model for other corporate for hosting a successful and green competition, promoting the low carbon ways of life as well as the sustainable development concept to the participants.’

On the other hand, CHK also encourages all participants to bring their own water bottle and use public transport during the competition to minimize the carbon footprint, making CPM a meaningful CarbonCare® event.
