Canon Photo Marathon 2010 Winners' Award Presentation Ceremony
2010-OCT-28

Extended last year's extraordinary success, Canon Hongkong (CHK) hosted its second Canon Photo Marathon in Hong Kong on 3rd October at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Through the one-day photographic competition, 800 participants were required to complete three themed assignments in 11 hours. "Urbanized Pollution Problem", "Smiling Hong Kong – Happy Sunday" and "School". Participants were given only one and half hours to complete each theme.

"We believe images can be created and passed on through an environmental friendly way," said Mr Kevin Kobayashi, President & CEO of CHK. Hence, CHK has committed itself to neutralizing the environmental impact of Canon Photo Marathon 2010, by purchasing carbon credits for the first time to offset the carbon emissions released during the competition. The credits will benefit a wind power project in Jilin Province in China. CHK also donated all proceeds from registration fee at a total of HK$80,000 to Friends of the Earth (HK) (FoE(HK)) in supporting its environmental programs.

On the event day, there were 723 of participants in total and received over 4,000 photos from all 3 themes. It took 3 weeks for the Panel of Judges to select, review and discuss to final confirm all winners for each theme. The list of winners was announced through the Canon Photo Marathon 2010 official website www.canon.com.hk/photomarathon2010, Sing Tao Daily News and The Standard on Oct 28, 2010. An Award Presentation Ceremony has taken place at the Canon Pro Solution Hub on the same day, with representatives from the Panel of Judges, shared their comments and views during the winner' s selection process.

Sharing from judges
* The overall standard and photo quality are comparatively better than last year.

Theme 1:
* Many good pictures were found from this theme with creative angles
* There are many different types of urban pollutions reflected from the photos.

Theme 2:
* Many photos are taking similar creativity and mix of pictures, baby and kids shinny smiling face but they are all quite artificial.
* Winning photos may not carry an impressive photo taking technique nor creative angles, however they are simple and hard to capture photos that reflect a warm feeling, thus match the second theme with happy smile on Sunday in Hong Kong.

Theme 3:
* With limited constrains from the theme "School", there are many similar photos.
* Some photos are very impressive and interesting that reflect truly a school with memorable moment.
