Canon “FOR EXPERT.BY EXPERT” presents
“Hunt in the City” Photo Exhibition and Seminars
Discover the world-class wonder of nature

As part of its strong commitment to promoting photography culture, Canon’s “FOR EXPERTBY EXPERT” program continues to bring top-class photographers from across the globe to share their passion and work in specific genres with fellow enthusiasts. This year, Canon proudly presents a redefined vision of imaging with “Hunt in the City”, a photo exhibition and seminars to be held at Innocentre in Kowloon Tong that features renowned nature photographers John Holmes and Samson So. Their work not only showcases stunning nature photography, but also promotes natural conservation, making it a can’t-miss event for both photo and nature enthusiasts.

Black kites spread their wings above Hong Kong—A rare scenery across the world
The “FOR EXPERTBY EXPERT” series was created as a platform for established photographers to share their photographs and expertise with other photo enthusiasts in Hong Kong. This time, John Holmes and Samson So, who are both keen bird enthusiasts and nature lovers, have made Hong Kong’s signature black kites the focus of their “Hunt in the City” photo collection.

The sight of these majestic birds circling high above the urban areas of Hong Kong is often taken for granted by native Hong Kongers. On a global basis, such sightings are actually very rare, with New York City and New Delhi the only other metropolitan areas where black kites can be seen.

Coinciding with the exhibition, this time of year is the perfect season for local bird photography and especially for capturing the black kites that migrate south in large numbers during winter. This makes Hong Kong one of the greatest concentrations of the raptors in the world and a major centre for research, education and appreciation of the species. The two nature photographers set out to explore a large number of locations in the city, using Canon EOS System to capture the local wonders of nature and provide a new perspective on Hong Kong’s dramatic scenery.

John Holmes, from the United Kingdom, has over 20 years’ experience observing and photographing birds. He is also very active in the field of conservation and has participated in a number of bird-related research projects. Samson So, founder of the Eco Institute, is committed to promoting nature conservation and uses his photographs to share the incredible beauty of nature. In this “Hunt in the City” collection, both photographers aim to share the relationship between the black kites hunting in the city and the urban life going on around them in order to spread the message of promoting natural conservation and nature photography.

EOS 7D Mark II DSLR and EF lens capture the hunters
With its icy appearance, the black kite is recognized as one of the most popular subjects for nature photographers, who need to possess an acute sense for movement and sound knowledge of the functionality of professional equipment to capture the speed, beauty and elusive movement of the black kites.

Canon’s imaging products have long been seen as the most reliable and professional partners for all photographers. For the “Hunt in the City” photo collection, the two photographers were fully supported by the latest Canon products – the high speed APS-C flagship DSLR camera EOS 7D Mark II, high mobility super telephoto zoom lens EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM, and the super telephoto lens EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM.

The “Hunt in the City” photo exhibition will be held from February 2 to 8 at Innocentre, Kowloon Tong. In addition to exploring the life of black kites in the urban environment through their photo collection, both photographers will share their knowledge and expertise in nature photography, as well as their experiences using the latest EOS 7D Mark II and EF lenses, during the seminars. Canon will also give the audience hands-on experience of the latest EOS 7D Mark II and EF lenses and their outstanding features.

John Holmes

From the United Kingdom, John Holmes has lived in Hong Kong for more than 30 years. With over 20 years’ experience in bird watching and bird photography, he is a dedicated member of the bird watching and conservation community. He participates in various bird surveys including Hong Kong’s official monthly waterfowl counts.

He has contributed bird records and photographs to bird interest groups such as the Hong Kong Bird Watching Society, World Wide Fund For Nature Hong Kong (WWF HK), the Oriental Bird Club, of which he is an active member, and various projects for other green groups in Hong Kong and overseas.

John’s bird photographs are placed with professional photo agencies including Vireo in the United States and the Frank Lane Picture Agency in the UK. Wishing to spread his appreciation of birds and photography to more enthusiasts, he started writing his blog; John’s Hong Kong Birding, in 2007. John also guides visiting birders (without his camera) for eco-tour company Walk Hong Kong.

Being a photography lover since childhood, John discovered his passion for bird watching while rambling in Hong Kong's country parks. Since then, birding has led him to bird watching expeditions across Asia, discovering well-known and more obscure birding sites in countries such as China, India, Malaysia and Cambodia, and sharing his experience with readers through informative travel reports.
